2002 Senate Report on Cannabis
September 4, 2012 is the 10-year anniversary of the report by the Senate Special Committee on Illegal Drugs, entitled: “Cannabis: Our Position for a Canadian Public Policy”
NORML Canada is commemorating the 10-year anniversary of the landmark 2002 Senate Report on Cannabis with a campaign to inform Canadians, and especially our politicians, about the serious consequences for Canadian society if we continue to ignore the important findings and conclusions within the Senate Committee’s comprehensive report.
Read the Committee’s September 4, 2002 news release.
The committee concluded that leaving the supply of cannabis to the black market is resulting in much more harm to society than good.
Cannabis prohibition is causing considerable damage to Canadian society and it is unconscionable for our politicians to continue to ignore the findings of the Committee’s authoritative report, to the detriment of Canadian society.“The continued prohibition of cannabis jeopardizes the health and well-being of Canadians much more than does the substance itself.”
– Report of the Senate Special Committee on Illegal Drugs
We at NORML Canada feel a responsibility to our fellow Canadians, and to future generations, to do what we can to generate informed discussion about our harmful cannabis policies, because we know that rational, effective policy will only come from informed national debate.
We agree wholeheartedly with the Committee’s conclusion:
“It is time to recognize what is patently obvious: our policies have been ineffective, because they are poor policies.”For Canada’s sake, we urge all concerned Canadians to join us in this effort to bring about an honest, national conversation about cannabis policy.
